Eight disciplines, one accountable team.

Most projects we take on need more than one kind of engineer, and the trouble usually starts where those specialties meet. Alares runs eight disciplines under one roof so those handoffs happen inside one team instead of across three contracts. Here is what each one does, with a real project behind it.

Why one team matters

When architecture, mechanical and structural sit in separate firms, the gaps between them become the owner's problem: the duct that clashes with the beam, the sequence nobody owns, the RFI that bounces for two weeks. Keeping the disciplines together means one team catches those conflicts before they reach the field, and one point of contact answers for the whole design. The eight below are how we cover a project end to end.

01 · Architecture

From concept through construction documents, our architectural work grounds every project in how the space will actually be used. On healthcare renovations like the mental-health ward at the Brockton VA and clinic work across the system, that means designs that meet VA standards for safety and privacy while staying buildable on a live campus.

02 · Mechanical, electrical & plumbing

MEP is the clinical infrastructure of a hospital, not a finish. At the Bedford VA research building we designed a heat-pump system conditioning a 100% outside-air load and cut energy cost by roughly 35 percent, meeting the clinical requirement and the operating-cost requirement in the same move.

03 · Structural & seismic

We evaluate aging structures to ASCE 41 and the VA Seismic Design Handbook, then design the retrofit. At the East Orange boiler plant that meant buttress walls on new piers and braced piping so the plant keeps running through an earthquake, with a footing detail worked out on site to clear the tunnel to the main hospital.

04 · Owner's representation & construction management

We sit on the owner's side of the table: reviewing submittals, vetting RFIs, pricing modifications with an independent estimate, and driving the punch list to closeout. On the Houston solar carport build our daily on-site management carried a $21M project from groundbreaking to closeout.

05 · Commissioning & retrocommissioning

We verify that systems actually do what the design says under real load. Commissioning the Newington CHP plant caught a control sequence that was cooling its own absorption chillers; retrocommissioning 11 VISN 1 campuses found 15 to 20 percent energy savings with no capital project.

06 · Sustainability & energy modeling

Energy modeling to ASHRAE 90.1 confirms a design meets VA sustainability guidelines before it is built, and it points to the moves that pay back, from on-site solar to plant consolidation to the efficiency measures that are the cheapest carbon of all.

07 · Environmental assessment & NEPA

We carry federal projects through NEPA to a Finding of No Significant Impact, with the field data and multi-agency permitting behind it. The Reno geothermal study cleared its environmental review while coordinating approvals across the BLM, two Nevada divisions and the City of Reno.

08 · Energy consulting & feasibility studies

Before an owner commits capital to a big bet, we prove it out. At the Reno VA that meant a 2,200-foot test well and full thermal production testing to confirm direct-use geothermal was viable, a real answer backed by a well in the ground rather than an assumption on paper.

The throughline

Eight disciplines is not eight silos. It is one team that can take a project from a feasibility question through design, construction and commissioning without handing the owner off at every seam. That continuity is the point, and it is what keeps the hard problems from falling through the cracks.
