Alares was founded in 2007 by Don Maggioli, a West Point graduate and former Green Beret officer. Nearly everything since has been federal and healthcare work: VA medical centers, national cemeteries, GSA buildings. That narrowness is the point. The federal standards, the VA handbooks, the infection control requirements and the phasing constraints of a hospital that never closes are all knowledge you only get by doing it repeatedly.
10.5 million square feet
Across 11 VA hospital campuses in New England, we retrocommissioned more than 10.5 million square feet of healthcare space and identified energy savings of 15 to 20 percent. No new chillers, no new boilers, no capital project. The savings came from finding systems that had drifted out of tune and putting them back.
That is the number we would point a facility manager at first, because it is the cheapest energy anyone will ever buy back.
45 buildings, 11 campuses
Across California, our structural team evaluated 45 VA buildings, assessing structural and nonstructural components against the VA Seismic Design Handbook H-18-8 and ASCE 41 through Tier 1 and Tier 2 assessments, with retrofit recommendations engineered building by building. A separate nationwide program grouped 11 geographically dispersed campuses into three regional teams, among them Manchester, Augusta, Asheville and Albuquerque.
At that volume the discipline matters more than the engineering. Every building gets the same method so the results can actually be compared and prioritized.
5 megawatts
At the Houston VA Medical Center, Alares provided construction management and commissioning for a 5.0 MW solar photovoltaic carport system across the campus parking lots, roughly a $21M build carried from groundbreaking through closeout with a manager on site daily.
Parking lots the VA already owned now generate power and shade the cars underneath. That is usually the best renewable move available on a federal campus, because the land is already on the books.
2,200 feet
Earlier studies suggested the Moana Hot Springs resource might extend under the Reno VA Medical Center, but nobody had proof. We designed and installed a test well to a depth of 2,200 feet, ran static and dynamic thermal production testing, and cleared a full environmental assessment under NEPA to a Finding of No Significant Impact, coordinating permits across four agencies.
The testing confirmed direct-use geothermal heating is viable for the campus. Before an owner commits capital to something that large, somebody has to put a well in the ground and find out.
The number that is not in the list
Every project above happened in a building that stayed open. The hospitals kept admitting patients, the plants kept making steam, the courthouse kept sitting. That constraint shapes more of our work than any figure here, and it is the one thing a statistic cannot show.
